To find a WeChat group you already joined, search your chats and check saved Group Chats in Contacts. To join a new group, ask a member or organizer for an invitation or a current group QR code. Searching for a topic is different from recovering one of your existing conversations.
Find a group you already belong to
- Use the search field on the Chats screen and enter part of the group name or a distinctive word you remember. Check the result type so you do not confuse a message result with a new group invitation.
- Look in Contacts → Group Chats for groups you saved. This is not necessarily a complete list of every group you have joined.
- If your version offers + → New Chat → Select a Group, use it to look for an existing group. Menu labels vary.
- Ask a member you know to confirm whether you are still in the group. If you left or were removed, a fresh invitation may be needed.
When you find an important group, open its information panel and look for Save to Contacts. Saving a group makes it easier to find again; it is not a backup of its message history.

Join a new Shanghai community group
Start with the organizer: a language exchange, school, coworking space, sports club or event host. Ask which group is active and what its purpose is. A trusted invitation is more useful than a search result containing an old QR code.
Scan a group code using WeChat’s scanner and read the join screen. Follow the displayed expiry or approval conditions. If the code no longer works, ask the organizer for a new invitation; this guide does not assume every code expires after the same number of hours.
Can you search all public WeChat groups?
Do not treat WeChat search as a complete directory of joinable groups. Search results, public posts and external listings may help you find an organizer, but they do not guarantee that a group is active, open or suitable for you.
For job communities, SmartShanghai’s job listings can be a starting point for finding employers and contacts. Check each listing directly rather than assuming it supplies a working group QR code.
If a group or its messages disappear
Distinguish finding the group from recovering its chat history. Reopening a group does not necessarily restore deleted messages. Before reinstalling or changing phones, use the app’s current backup or migration instructions and check that the backup completed.
Never give a group administrator your SMS login code or pay a stranger to “restore” access. If the account itself is inaccessible, start with the app’s Help & Feedback options.
