Choose a pass by comparing its price with the total fares for your planned trips. Check first and last trains for the specific station, direction, and travel date; there is no single closing time for the whole network.

Shanghai Subway Map Overview

When I visited Shanghai in 2009, I found the metro easy to use even as a nonnative speaker. The network has expanded since then. For a journey today, use the official Shanghai metro guide and network map, then check the station, direction, interchange, and exit for your destination.

This guide groups sightseeing ideas by metro line. The embedded location maps mark places of interest; they are not rail diagrams and do not mean every pin is a direct stop on the line. Some visits need a transfer or an onward walk.

Traveling Spots Along Each Subway Line

Start with the destination station, then check the route from your hotel. A station near an attraction may still involve a walk to the correct entrance.

Lines 1 and 2 are useful for central sightseeing. Lines 9 and 10 serve several popular neighborhoods. For Disney Resort, use Line 11; for Zhujiajiao, plan around Line 17. These destinations should not be treated as direct stops on Lines 7 or 9.

Save the destination’s Chinese name and check the return route before setting out.

Line 1

Shanghai’s Metro Line 1, one of the oldest and most important lines in the city’s subway network, passes through many key areas and attractions. Here are some famous travel spots accessible via Line 1:

1. People’s Square (人民广场): This is the heart of Shanghai, surrounded by several major attractions, including the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, and the famous Nanjing Road Shopping Street.
2. Xujiahui (徐家汇): Known as a major shopping and entertainment area, Xujiahui is home to numerous malls, electronic markets, and the Xujiahui Cathedral.
3. Shanghai Railway Station (上海火车站): A major rail hub. Check your intercity ticket carefully: Shanghai Railway Station and Hongqiao Railway Station are different destinations.
4. Hanzhong Road (汉中路): An interchange useful for planning onward travel. For a museum visit, check the museum’s own directions and the most convenient station exit.
5. Shanghai Indoor Stadium (上海体育馆): Near the Xujiahui area, this spot is not just for sports events but also concerts and other large-scale events. It’s also close to the Shanghai Stadium.
6. South Shaanxi Road (陕西南路): This station provides access to the trendy Huaihai Road shopping district, famous for its luxury brands, boutique stores, and charming cafes.
7. Changshu Road (常熟路): Offers access to the French Concession area, known for its beautiful tree-lined streets, historic architecture, and a great selection of bars and restaurants.
8. South Huangpi Road / 一大会址·黄陂南路: Useful for the Huaihai Road area. Match the full station name in your current route planner; do not confuse it with Xintiandi station.
9. Jinjiang Park (锦江乐园): A Line 1 station in southwestern Shanghai. Check the attraction’s current opening arrangements before planning a visit.

Line 2

Line 2 links Pudong Airport with central Shanghai and Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2. Hongqiao Airport Terminal 1 is served by Line 10 instead. See the official airport Metro guide. Useful central stops include Lujiazui, East Nanjing Road, People’s Square, and Jing’an Temple.

1. Pudong International Airport (浦东国际机场): The starting point for many international visitors, located in the Pudong district and providing easy access to the city.
2. Lujiazui (陆家嘴): Situated in the heart of Pudong’s financial district, Lujiazui is famous for its skyscrapers, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Jin Mao Tower. It’s also home to the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium and various shopping malls.
3. East Nanjing Road (南京东路): One of Shanghai’s busiest shopping streets, offering a mix of modern malls, traditional stores, and food outlets.
4. People’s Square (人民广场): A central hub for culture and leisure, with easy access to the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, and Nanjing Road.
5. Jing’an Temple (静安寺): An ancient Buddhist temple located within the bustling Jing’an District, surrounded by high-end shopping malls and boutique stores.
6. Zhongshan Park (中山公园): A large public park in the Changning district, offers a peaceful escape from the city hustle, with beautiful gardens and leisure facilities.
7. Hongqiao Railway Station and Hongqiao Airport T2: These are separate Line 2 stops. Choose the one shown on your flight or train booking.
8. Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (上海科技馆): Use the station as a route-planning reference, and check the museum’s current opening and reservation information before visiting.
9. Century Park (世纪公园): The largest park in Pudong, offering expansive green spaces, lakes, and areas for picnics and outdoor activities.
10. Yu Garden requires a different line: Yuyuan Garden station is on Lines 10 and 14, not Line 2. Plan a transfer using the official network map. See the city’s Yuyuan station description.

Line 3

Shanghai Metro Line 3, also known as the Pearl Line, is a north-south line that connects the northern suburbs with the southern part of the city, passing through several districts:

1. Shanghai South Railway Station (上海南站): A major railway station in Shanghai that connects the city to numerous destinations across China. The area around the station has various amenities for travelers.
2. Stadium visits require a route check: Do not treat Shanghai Indoor Stadium as a Line 3 station. Search the exact venue and use the current network map to select the station and any transfer.
3. Zhongshan Park (中山公园): Accessible via the interchange with Line 2 and Line 4, Zhongshan Park is a large public park featuring beautiful landscapes, a lake, and recreational areas.
4. Hongkou Football Stadium (虹口足球场): This station is near the Hongkou Football Stadium, a key venue for football (soccer) matches and other sporting events.

Line 7 and destinations requiring a transfer

Line 7 serves Jing’an Temple and Changshou Road. The additional destinations below require other lines or onward travel; use the network map to plan each journey.

1. Jing’an Temple (静安寺): This ancient Buddhist temple is a serene sanctuary amidst the bustling city. It’s surrounded by a commercial district that features high-end shopping, dining, and entertainment options.
2. Changshou Road (长寿路): Close to the vibrant shopping and dining areas in the Putuo District, as well as the historic Jade Buddha Temple, which is known for its exquisite jade statues.
3. Zhongshan Park requires another line: It is served by Lines 2, 3, and 4, not Line 7. Plan a transfer rather than looking for it on the Line 7 platform map.
4. Longhua Temple: Use Longhua station on Lines 11 or 12, then follow directions to the temple area. The city’s Longhua area guide confirms these lines.
5. Zhenru area: Plan around Zhenru station on Lines 11 and 14, rather than treating Lanxi Road as a Line 7 stop. See the city’s Zhenru transport description.
6. Shanghai Disney Resort: The resort’s official directions say: Take Line 11 to Disney Resort Station. There is no direct Line 7-to-Line 11 interchange at Yaohua Road; use the route planner for the required connections.

Line 9 and the separate Line 17 trip to Zhujiajiao

Shanghai Metro Line 9, extending from the eastern to the southwestern parts of Shanghai, passes through several natural parks and ancient towns:

1. Xujiahui (徐家汇): One of Shanghai’s major commercial and shopping districts, Xujiahui is known for its large shopping malls, electronic markets, and the Xujiahui Cathedral. It’s a bustling area with plenty of dining and entertainment options.
2. Dapuqiao (打浦桥): Close to Tianzifang, an arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated traditional residential area in the French Concession. Tianzifang is famous for its narrow alleys, shikumen houses, boutique shops, art galleries, and cafes.
3. Qibao (七宝): An ancient town with a history spanning over a thousand years, Qibao is known for its traditional architecture, waterways, and street food. It’s a great place to experience the charm of old Shanghai.
4. Sheshan (佘山): Line 9 can form part of a trip to the Sheshan area, but the station is not the entrance to every attraction. Plan the onward bus, taxi, or walk to your chosen site.
5. Zhujiajiao uses Line 17: Travel to Zhujiajiao station on Line 17, then plan the final connection to the old town. The ancient town’s official transport page describes onward bus options. Do not rely on a “short bus ride” from a Line 9 terminus.

Line 10

1. Hongqiao Railway Station (虹桥火车站): Check that your Line 10 train is heading toward Hongqiao Railway Station. The railway station and airport terminals are distinct stops.
2. Shanghai Zoo (上海动物园): A popular attraction for families and animal lovers, the Shanghai Zoo hosts a variety of Chinese and exotic animals in well-maintained habitats.
3. Xintiandi (新天地): Known for its preserved Shikumen (stone gate) houses within a modern entertainment complex, Xintiandi offers a unique blend of historical and cultural elements with its fashionable boutiques, restaurants, and cafes.
4. Yuyuan Garden (豫园): A beautiful and classic Chinese garden located in the Old City of Shanghai, offering a peaceful escape with its traditional pavilions, ponds, and rockeries. Nearby is the bustling Yuyuan Market, where visitors can shop for souvenirs and sample local snacks.
5. Shanghai Library (上海图书馆): One of the largest libraries in the world, the Shanghai Library offers extensive collections and a quiet place for reading and research. The area around the library is also pleasant for walks.
6. Nanjing East Road (南京东路): A premier shopping street in Shanghai, featuring a wide array of shops, department stores, and eateries. It’s a bustling area that showcases the vibrant urban life of the city.
7. Shanghai Film Museum: Plan this as a separate visit using the museum’s current visitor directions. It is not a Line 10 station; check the exact address and onward connection.
8. Hengshan Road (衡山路): Hengshan Road station is on Line 1, not Line 10. If visiting from the Line 10 corridor, plan a transfer or check the walking route to your chosen destination.

Before you travel

Use the official Shanghai metro guide and network map to confirm your route, fare, and payment options. A sightseeing map is useful for locating attractions, but the operator’s map determines which lines and interchanges you need.

Check attraction opening hours separately from train times. Allow for walking inside interchange stations and from the final exit to the entrance, especially when traveling with children or luggage.

Which line goes to Yu Garden? Yuyuan Garden station is on Lines 10 and 14. From Line 2, plan a transfer rather than searching for a direct Yu Garden stop.

Which line goes to Disney Resort? Line 11. Follow the resort’s official transport directions and check the return timetable for your travel date.

Can I reach Zhujiajiao on Line 9? The direct metro station for Zhujiajiao is on Line 17. Plan the onward connection from that station to the old town.
