Shanghai, one of the most vibrant cities in the world, welcomes millions of travelers each year. As a former resident returning to this bustling metropolis, I understand the importance of efficient airport and transit options. In this blog post, I will provide valuable insights and tips to help you navigate the airports and transit systems in Shanghai seamlessly.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG):
Pudong Airport is the primary international airport in Shanghai. While it may lack food options, it offers several transportation choices to reach the city center.
- Metro: Taking Line 2 of the metro is a cost-effective option, although it can be slow. In the past, passengers had to switch trains halfway through the journey, but this practice has been abandoned since 2020. Simply stay on the train and enjoy the ride.
- Maglev Train: For a faster option, consider the maglev train. However, keep in mind that it only takes you to a part of Pudong. You may need to switch to the metro or a taxi to reach your final destination (Long Xiang Station). Maglev costs 40 Yuan if you have the same-day flight ticket (original price is 50 Yuan).
- Taxi: Taxis are readily available at Pudong Airport. Ignore the individuals offering rides inside the airport and head to the official taxi stand outside. Ensure you have your destination printed out or saved on your phone in Chinese. Taxis should start the meter within a few minutes. Fare prices vary depending on the time of day and traffic, but a range of 200-300RMB should get you into the city. If you encounter any issues, don’t hesitate to call the police at 110.
Shanghai Hongqiao Airport:
Hongqiao Airport, although less international, offers better food options and is closer to the city center. Similar transportation options are available here.
- Metro: Taking the metro from Hongqiao Airport is a convenient way to reach your destination. Follow the same guidelines as mentioned for Pudong Airport.
- Taxi: Taxis are also available at Hongqiao Airport. Remember to follow the proper procedures and have your destination details ready.
- Hongqiao Railway Station: Shanghai Hongqiao Railway station is only 1 metro station away from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. If you need to take train after landing at Hongqiao Airport, there are several options for you to get to the Hongqiao Railway Station. Check here for route details.
Buying tickets
You can buy flight tickets on Ctrip (They’re technically Trip.com now, their name in app stores might be under that, rather than ‘Ctrip’.) They have an English app. You can book through there, but you will not get a ticket. It’s linked to your passport number.
The app should give you the platform and time, for example, Hongqiao, platform B15, time 2:20pm. The train stations are easy to navigate. They usually start boarding 15 minutes ahead of time.
There will usually be automated queues that most people will use. Have your passport open, put the ID page into the scanner, and it should let you through. If not, there are usually attendants off to the side to help you.
Check here for booking train tickets, including the high-speed train.
Buying SIM cards at Shanghai Pudong Airport:
If you need a temporary SIM card for data during your stay in Shanghai, you can easily purchase one at the airport.
At Shanghai Pudong Airport, you’ll find storefronts near the luggage claim hall. The process is quick, usually taking around 5 minutes.
Be prepared to provide your passport, as this is a standard requirement. While I’m unsure if the prices at the airport differ from those in the city, the convenience of obtaining a SIM card upon arrival is worth considering. Check here for more details and different options for SIM card.
Bottom Line
As you plan your trip to Shanghai, understanding the airport and transit options is crucial for a smooth and enjoyable experience. Whether you choose to take the metro, maglev train, or taxi, following the guidelines provided will help you navigate the city with ease. Remember to stay vigilant against potential scams and always have your destination details ready. Enjoy your time in Shanghai, one of the world’s most captivating cities!
