Sign up for WeChat with your own mobile number in the official app, then complete the security checks shown for your attempt. Some applicants are asked for assistance from an eligible existing user. Messaging registration and Weixin Pay identity verification are separate processes.
Tencent’s Weixin and WeChat overview describes the messaging and service ecosystem. For a visitor, the first goal is a working account you can recover—not activating every payment or social feature at once.
How to register
- Install the official WeChat app from your device’s app store and verify the publisher.
- Choose Sign Up and the mobile-number option. Select your country code and enter your own number.
- Provide the requested nickname and password, then read the terms and privacy notice before agreeing.
- Complete SMS verification and any additional security check offered. Keep the registration screen open while following its instructions.
- Once approved, confirm you can sign in and check the account-security and recovery settings.
What if WeChat asks a friend to help?
Read the eligibility conditions displayed on your registration screen and ask a trusted existing user who meets them. The qualifying account age, region and other conditions may differ. Do not rely on a universal rule that every helper must have WeChat Pay and a six-month-old account.
Duke Kunshan University’s 2024 visitor guide documents assisted registration, but it is an earlier example rather than a current eligibility guarantee. The requirements shown by WeChat for your attempt should guide the helper.

Common signup problems

| SMS code does not arrive | Check the country code, number, SIM signal and carrier filtering. Follow any retry timer. |
| Too many attempts or unusual registration | Stop repeated attempts and follow the app’s waiting or support instructions. |
| No eligible helper | Use the help option offered in the registration flow. Avoid paid strangers selling verification. |
| Account blocked after signup | Use the official recovery flow; creating repeated replacement accounts is not a reliable fix. |
Do you need a passport to create a messaging account?

After registration
Keep your password and linked number accessible. Review the recovery options your version offers and back up important chats before reinstalling or moving devices. Do not assume linking a particular social network is supported or that changing your WeChat ID after a few days is required.
